Valalan's Jewelers

One of the most solidly stabled and popular jewelry stores in the South Bay is a perfect example of how women can – and do – create their own great successful business. Alice Tsai, whose mother, Amy, founded what is now Valalan’s Jewelers 40 years ago as the Jade Palace in Del Amo Mall, says that when she was a child she could hardly wait to finish her homework so she could go help her mother in the store.

Today, Tsai is a graduate gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America, where she also worked for more than five years grading diamonds in the GIA laboratory. She went on to earn a design degree that gives her special skills in creating and sketching ideas for original and custom jewelry. Customers like dealing with her so much that several have raved in online review about her skill and sensitivity to their wants.

“Many people, especially women, have a lot of old jewelry and they don’t really know what to do with it, “she says. “When they come to us, we look at all the different avenues they can take, whether it’s selling the jewelry, or having it melted down and redesigned into something new. It’s one of our specialties.”
